Take a club football model that performs well across a domestic season, point it at an international tournament, and it will produce confident, well-formatted, badly calibrated numbers.

The failure is not a bug. It is a mismatch between the assumptions the model was fitted on and the data-generating process it has been handed. Four things change.

1. The sample collapses

A Premier League club plays 38 league matches a year, plus cups. A national team plays roughly ten, spread across camps months apart, with a squad that changes between them.

Every form measure a club model relies on — rolling xG over ten matches, recent points per game, current-season attacking strength — is either unavailable or computed on a sample too small to mean anything. Worse, much of that small sample consists of qualifying fixtures against opposition so much weaker that the results carry almost no information about how the team performs against a peer.

The adjustment is to lean far more heavily on long-horizon ratings that decay slowly, and to weight matches by opponent quality rather than treating them equally.

2. Cross-confederation comparison is the core problem

This is the hardest part of international modelling, and it has no fully satisfying solution.

Within a confederation, qualifying establishes a clean ranking: teams play each other, results are directly comparable. Across confederations, the evidence is thin. Two teams that have never met, whose only shared opponents are three or four teams from a third confederation, still need to be placed on the same scale.

The only evidence that connects the groups is inter-confederation matches — friendlies, intercontinental playoffs, and tournament fixtures. Those matches therefore carry disproportionate weight in the ratings, which makes the ratings sensitive to a small number of results and is precisely why confidence intervals on cross-confederation fixtures should be wide.

A model that reports a narrow probability on such a fixture is not being precise. It is being overconfident.

3. Neutral venues are not fully neutral

Tournament football is often played at neutral grounds, which removes the structural home advantage a club model expects.

It does not remove everything. Crowd composition frequently favours one team heavily depending on diaspora and travel distance. Altitude, heat and humidity create genuine acclimatisation effects. A team playing its group stage in one climate zone and its knockout tie in another faces a real adjustment cost.

The practical approach is to replace a binary home/away term with explicit features: travel distance, altitude differential, climate differential, and estimated crowd split. A host nation, meanwhile, retains something close to full home advantage and should be modelled that way.

4. Knockout football is a different process

Group matches end after ninety minutes and can be drawn. Knockout ties cannot.

Extra time has a different scoring rate than normal time and a different fatigue profile, and a penalty shootout is close to a coin flip with only a small skill component. A model that treats a knockout tie as a single ninety-minute process and then bolts on a shootout probability will misprice both the tie and any associated markets.

The correct structure is sequential: model normal time, then condition extra time on a draw after ninety, then condition the shootout on a draw after extra time. Each stage has its own parameters.
